Hi all,

Here's a video I recorded after mounting the rebuilt gearbox. The high gear-low gear lever is placed in neutral and the gear lever in 2nd. Now and then I press the clutch to better appreciate the difference. Driving in 2nd gear the noise is always present. If someone has any idea it would be greatly appreciated, thank you. (Either in English or French, I type in English as I find it far easier in my British laptop.)

:hello:
have you replaced the 2nd gear pignion ? if yes ,there is probably a problem on the pignion ....... you had no noise before oppening the gear box?

i have also a problem on a 1973 serie's 3 diesel , just when engaging the second ratio ,after nothing .....but i absolutly knows noting about the history of this gearbox ....

Hi cambouis 14, yes the 2nd gear pinion has been replaced by a new brand one, even though the old looked very well, but the mechanic preferred to put the two parts new, i.e. the synchro and the pinion. Thing is, that before the noise was the same, the gearbox was opened two times in Morocco with null result, the second one we placed a new synchro but not a new pinion. Now this 3rd. opening has been done in Spain by a trustful guy whose garage is a Land Rover specialist many years since. I carried the repaired gearbox up to Morocco, where I live, and now the guy is truly appalled, he suggests that I send again the gearbox there and he would replace the pinion and synchro by other new ones and check the whole again at no cost. Anyway he has suggested via E-mail that I check the selectors forks to see whether there is some friction between them and any pinion.

Thanks for your answer :hello:

hi again
was the pinion original (NOS) or copy ? if the guy thinks the forks can touch somewhere (in the pinions ) it's not a very good idea of his job ...... he could check before sending a rebuilt unit .....

i have heard it's very dificult to replace one part (pinion) in a Land-rover gearbox without noise all the pinions go together and don't like to be mixed ...... perhaps they have replace the good one and left the bad one (the noisy one ) strange for a specialist .....

another solution would be to ask him to send you another gearbox (controled or rebuilt ) but in good working condition , and then send him your's ......

Hi again, he bought from Italy, as he says he's rather done with the British parts which in his opinion are not as before. I myself bought from Lrseries the latest synchro 3-4 a couple of years ago and as soon as I saw it, the difference with my old original was impressive. Anyway I mounted it and now the guy has seen it when dismantling and told me that such synchro seemed manufactured in Papua New Guinea or the like, so he recommended buying another, and then we bought the two (1-2 and 3-4) from that Italian store. He says he is pretty happy with them although from time to time some faulty parts appear as well. And he bought the pinions not to keep the old ones since the synchros were new...
In regards to the forks, it was I who suggested the possibility. He responded that he doubted it very much but that since I have the gearbox in plain sight, I could check and tell him what I find. So we will see tomorrow :spanner:

I have taken out the 1-2nd selector with its fork and substituted it by that of the dismounted gearbox, that turned out to be in a much better condition as shown on the image. Now the noise has almost disappeared, and when I ran the engine without selectors, as suggested by the mechanic via E-mail, there is no noise at all, from which I have to conclude that the fork is the cause. The only reasonable thing that I find is that the diameter of the new synchro, I mean the surface on which the fork slides, be slightly bigger than the original, so that I assume the little remaining noise will diminish and eventually disappear over time.
